Each Thursday morning for the past ten years St. Matthew’s has been giving bags of food to the needy. Patrons gather early and hear some uplifting music, Bible reading, prayer and a devotional as they wait in line for the food bags. The Food Pantry provides food for people who have kitchens as well as for people who have no kitchens in which to prepare food.
Food is collected on the first Sunday of each month (see below for suggested items) and distributed from the Great Hall on the Henderson side of the Cathedral . Monetary donations are also accepted (see below for online donations.) The past year saw a massive increase in the impact of our food ministry. Thanks to your generous donations and a community grant, we added fresh fruit and vegetables to our weekly dry food grocery package. Patrons have seen a significant increase in the quantity and quality of the food offered. Additionally, we have expanded our Thursday morning hot meal program to include a changing menu that ranges from soups to casseroles, all prepared by our own volunteer teams.
Last Christmas, approximately 25 members of the Cathedral sponsored a Christmas Dinner with all the trimmings for our food pantry patrons. We had Christmas Carols, gifts, and lovely fellowship in the Great Hall with 70+ persons in attendance.
If you would like to volunteer or donate money toward this cause, see below.
